The Challenge
Municipal office buildings are not always designed with collaboration, recruitment, or future growth in mind. In this case, the City of Carlsbad had spent years simply adding more of the same — more cubicles, more high privacy partitions, and more of an outdated office layout that no longer supported how modern teams work. A new leadership team recognized the opportunity to rethink the space and explore how strategic furniture planning, improved office layout, and stronger team connection could create a more functional and future-focused workplace.
What Mattered Most to the Client
The client wanted to move beyond “the way it had always been done” and present a clear, forward-thinking vision to broader office leadership. It was important to create a workplace that would support the City’s long-term goals, improve day-to-day function, and help attract and retain talented staff for years to come. This was about more than replacing furniture — it was about setting a new standard for future office planning.
What We Handled
Our team led the project from design through installation, managing a complete office reconfiguration with a fresh space plan, updated furniture standards, and new branded artwork. Working within the City’s approved furniture list — while thoughtfully expanding it where needed — we developed a more modern and flexible workplace solution. We also incorporated glass walls for new meeting rooms, allowing for greater collaboration, improved visibility, and a lighter, more open feel throughout the office.
Strategic Moves We Made
We approached the project as both a design upgrade and a workplace strategy initiative. By lowering oversized partition walls, improving sightlines, and creating a more intentional mix of open work areas and meeting spaces, we transformed the office into a more connected, comfortable, and efficient environment. Every design move was meant to support flexibility, improve team interaction, and demonstrate how thoughtful office planning can help public-sector workplaces evolve to meet modern expectations.
The Result
The finished office feels dramatically more open, modern, and welcoming. Lowering the tall partition walls eliminated the maze-like feeling of the previous layout and created a workspace that feels more like a progressive technology office than a traditional government building. The success of this workplace transformation led to three additional City projects — a powerful reflection of the impact this redesign had on both the client experience and the future of their office planning.
