Over the last several years, organizations across the country have been asking an important question:

How do we create an office people actually want to come back to?

When the San Diego Foundation approached our team, they were thinking about this exact challenge. Like many organizations, they had experienced the shift toward remote work and wanted to ensure that when employees came into the office, the experience would feel purposeful, inspiring, and highly functional.

The goal wasn’t simply to refresh the space.

The goal was to create an environment so engaging and supportive that employees would choose to come into the office.

Over the course of an 18-month transformation, our team worked closely with the San Diego Foundation to reimagine their workspace from the ground up.

Listening First: Understanding What Wasn’t Working

Every successful workplace transformation begins with listening.

Through collaborative discussions with the leadership team and staff, we explored what was working in the existing office—and more importantly, what wasn’t.

Common themes quickly emerged:

  • Spaces that didn’t support the way teams collaborate today
  • A lack of flexible environments for different work styles
  • Limited areas for casual connection and informal meetings
  • An opportunity to better reflect the Foundation’s mission and culture within the physical space

These insights became the foundation for the design strategy moving forward.

Designing a Workplace Worth the Commute

Instead of designing a traditional office layout, we curated a list of “must-have” features and spaces that would support a modern, flexible work environment.

The goal was to provide employees with options—spaces that allow them to focus, collaborate, socialize, and recharge throughout the day.

Key design priorities included:

• Flexible meeting areas for both formal and informal collaboration
• Comfortable lounge environments that encourage connection
• Spaces designed for quiet, focused work
• Improved circulation and flow throughout the office
• Highly functional workstations that support productivity

By offering a variety of environments, the office now supports the many ways people work throughout the day.

Amplifying Brand and Culture Through Design

Beyond functionality, another major objective was ensuring that the space felt unmistakably like the San Diego Foundation.

Through graphics, signage, and thoughtfully selected materials, we worked to translate the organization’s mission and values into a physical environment.

A carefully curated palette of colors, textures, and finishes reflects the Foundation’s brand while creating warmth and visual interest throughout the office.

Environmental graphics and messaging reinforce the organization’s purpose and impact, transforming everyday spaces into meaningful reminders of the work the Foundation does for the San Diego community.

The result is an environment that not only supports productivity but also strengthens cultural identity.

A Transformation 18 Months in the Making

Projects of this scale require patience, collaboration, and careful planning.

Over the course of 18 months, our team partnered with the San Diego Foundation and the broader project team to guide the space through planning, design, and implementation.

The transformation captured in the slideshow reflects the journey from the original environment to a modern workplace designed for today’s workforce.

What once felt like a traditional office now functions as a dynamic workplace ecosystem—one that encourages employees to gather, collaborate, and reconnect.

The Future of the Workplace

The workplace is evolving, and organizations that thrive will be those that recognize an important truth:

People no longer come to the office because they have to.

They come because the space supports them, inspires them, and helps them do their best work.

At the San Diego Foundation, the newly transformed workplace does exactly that.
